OUR TEAM

United Canine Scent Sport was built from a passion for developing dogs and handlers through structured, practical training that works in the real world. What started as a focus on scent detection has grown into a complete system for training dogs, educating instructors, and creating clear progression pathways at every level.

We believe training should be clear, purposeful, and built around how dogs naturally learn. Our approach focuses on developing confidence, engagement, and understanding, giving both dogs and handlers the skills they need to succeed, whether that’s in everyday life, sport, or professional work.

Our programmes are designed not only for dog owners, but also for instructors who want to deliver high quality, structured training. We specialise in teaching people how to train and coach effectively, helping instructors build confidence, develop their skills, and grow successful businesses.

Through scent detection, tracking, and trailing, we provide dogs with an outlet for their natural behaviours while building strong, capable partnerships. Alongside this, our instructor pathways, workshops, competitions, and assessments create a complete system that supports long term development and progression.

At UCS, everything we do is built around progression, clarity, and real world application, giving you the structure, support, and direction to move forward with confidence.

SUSANNE BROUGHTON

Scent nerd, science geek, and canine behaviour specialist Susanne founded United Canine Scent Sport from a lifelong passion for understanding dogs, behaviour, and the incredible role scent plays in canine wellbeing, confidence, and working ability. Alongside UCS, Doghampton specialises in scent sport training for pet dogs and handlers, helping teams build confidence, engagement, and real-world skills through tracking, trailing, and scent detection.

With a background in canine behaviour and scent-based training, Susanne has worked across a wide range of areas including pet dog behaviour, reactive dogs, scent sport development, operational detection training, and specialist scent work projects. Her experience has included training and studying alongside detection and trailing professionals both in the UK and internationally, including work connected to scat detection and conservation based scent training in Kenya, as well as exposure to operational drug detection methodologies and working dog development.

The journey began growing up surrounded by animals and working alongside sheepdogs on a farm as a teenager. That early fascination with behaviour and learning led to studying psychology and completing an ILM diploma in business management before eventually leaving a career in logistics management to pursue canine behavioural work full time. Those foundations in human psychology, learning, communication, and leadership continue to influence the way training, coaching, and instructor development are delivered today.

Today, UCS combines practical experience with recognised qualifications in canine behaviour, scent detection, tracking, and trailing. Qualifications include City & Guilds certifications in detection and trailing, instructor development qualifications, and teaching credentials that support the mentoring and education of new instructors entering the scent industry.

United Canine Scent Sport is also proud to be the first pet dog scent sport organisation to gain Lantra accreditation, helping raise standards in instructor education and structured scent sport progression within the pet dog industry.

From helping nervous and reactive dogs gain confidence, to delivering instructor pathways, workshops, competitions, and operational style scent programmes, the focus remains the same, helping handlers better understand the dog in front of them and develop natural skills through reward-based, science-led training.

SANDRA DEVERSON

Dog sport enthusiast, scent nerd, and business strategist Sandra Deverson has been involved in the world of dogs and training since her teenage years, starting out at a local club with the family Boxer. Over the years, that passion developed into successful involvement across multiple dog sports including IGP, Breitensport, tracking, obedience, Rally-O, Hoopers, trailing, and scent detection.

Wanting to move away from traditional old-school training methods, Sandra focused on developing a more modern, reward-based approach to training and learning. This led to studying and training alongside respected professionals including Sarah Whitehead, Susanne Broughton, Wesley Visscher, Craig Ogilvie, and others within the scent and behaviour world.

Sandra began her mantrailing instructor journey in 2022 and later achieved Instructor League 3 status with United Canine Scent Sport, with continued professional development and further qualifications always in progress. A strong believer in lifelong learning, she is passionate about helping both dogs and handlers develop confidence, understanding, and practical skills through scent-based training.

Her Border Collie, Laoise, is a keen all-round sports dog who enjoys tracking, trailing, scent detection, obedience, Rally-O, Hoopers, and Treibball. Most mornings are spent doing what they love most, “all things nose”, whether that’s tracking across fields or developing detection skills in the training hall.

Alongside the dog world, Sandra has successfully run a consultancy business since 1995. Leading a team of seven, the company reviews close to 1,000 sets of accounts each month and supports businesses with profitability, risk management, strategy, and sustainable growth. Her experience in business development, mentoring, and education brings a unique balance of practical business knowledge and instructor support to the UCS and instructor training environment.

EWAN CUBITT

Dog enthusiast, operational handler, and canine behaviour professional Ewan Cubitt brings a practical, hands-on approach to working with dogs, combining behavioural knowledge with real world operational experience.

In 2018, Ewan completed the IMDT Level 4 OCN qualification in Canine Behaviour, developing a strong understanding of canine communication, behaviour, and body language. His approach focuses not only on training dogs, but on truly understanding what they are communicating through their behaviour, movement, stress signals, and interaction with the environment. This ability to read and interpret dogs clearly plays a huge role in building confidence, trust, and effective working partnerships.

Alongside his behaviour work, Ewan is a qualified Mantrailing Global Instructor and a NASDU-qualified drug detection dog handler, bringing operational-style handling skills and real-world scent work experience into both training and instructor development. His background combines practical deployment-style handling with reward-based training methods, helping teams develop clear communication, problem-solving ability, and strong working foundations.

As part of United Canine Scent Sport and Doghampton, Ewan supports everything from pet dog scent sport and trailing through to instructor mentoring, operational-style workshops, and advanced scent development.

Alongside the dog industry, Ewan also has extensive experience supporting and developing businesses. Combining practical leadership, problem-solving, and operational thinking, he continues to assist businesses with growth, structure, and development while balancing his work within the canine industry.

Whether supporting handlers with behavioural understanding, developing scentwork skills, or helping instructors build confidence in their training, Ewan brings a calm, knowledgeable, and practical approach focused on teamwork, communication, and understanding the dog in front of you.
